One of the major problems with our society

has got to be the No Fault Divorce. Here in the socialist soviet republic of Minnesota if you want a divorce, you got it. Split everything 50/50 and you're on your way. Obviously, it's a little more complicated than that what with custody, "valuations" of "assets" and "tax consequences", etc., but that's the main premise. What society SHOULD do is make divorce as DIFFICULT as possible. Couples should be encouraged or even forced to face their issues prior to a divorce being granted. (Obviously for documented cases of abuse, the process could be expedited.) I know some states require a separation of a certain time period prior to granting a divorce, but still, it's too easy. The penalties should be severe for abuse, adultery, addictions, etc. You participate in these activities, you're out with NOTHING. But these offenses need to documented, and proven - not just alleged. Then let the judge hammer whoever (husband or wife) is the offender. Make people think about their actions while married.

I am becoming aware of an entire new society. It's the society of the Fifty Something Divorcees (FSD). I am a new member (not by choice). It is AMAZING to see the number of former flower children who are now single looking for someone new. I am one of dozens of senior pilots I know or am aware of whose wives have left them. Everyday I hear about someone else. What is going on? I think it's an attitude - the ME attitude. I think a lot of it has to do with our pension. The word is out. It's a great pension. Tap into 50% of it, and you do alright. The kids are gone. It's an easy out. Go for it. Obviously, I'm over simplifying here. But I do think the divorce rate is a product of the baby boomer, flower child, it's all about me, generation. Now it's like government sanctioned spouse swapping out there. All these divorced, graying, new singles out there looking for new partners is disgusting to me. It's the reason Eharmony is so successful. I have no idea what the future holds for me relationship-wise. It's just so bizarre to be thrust into this environment. It's like being Alice in Wonderland. It's crazy!

Today is a day of mixed emotions for me. It's the day I sign the final divorce decree. I'm sad for the end of my 22 year marriage, but I look forward to the future and what God has in mind for me.

This me-first mindset, combined with a widespread victim mentality, has made America soft. Personal responsibility is no longer necessary, as people just blame others for their own problems. We really need to lose our attitude of self-entitlement.

And today doesn't have to be a sad day. You could look at it as a happy day, the last day of this tough chapter of your life and the definite beginning of the next one. You can leave all this junk behind. Easy for me to say, though, right?

Thanks Justin for reminding me of where I am. I edited my comments to reflect more accurately my feelings about this day.

You make some excellent points. I certainly don't have to worry about Mary divorcing me for my pension. Sure makes pre-nuptial agreements seem almost necessary unfortunately. One thing is for sure - life ain't fair. I know it's been very tough for you but you'll be just fine. As we have said throughout the process, it's just stuff. As soon as the word gets out up there your phone will be ringing off the hook. Proceed with caution...
At least you can leave the toilet seat up. (Just looking for the upside)
