What is it about Illinois?

Senator Dick Durbin

Is it just me or is it something about the Illinois water that makes that state's former and current US Senators want to send this country right down the socialist drain? I could go on and on about how Durbin's comments in the Senate have done more for the motivation and morale of Al Qaeda than Obam . , er, I mean Osama Bid Laden, but of course the War on Terror is over now that Obama is President, so I won't. But now what we have to be concerned about is Durbin's assault on free speech.

Durbin’s recent amendment concerning the Fairness Doctrine recently passed by 57-41 margin in the Senate. And what does Durbin’s amendment do? It forces the FCC to “take actions to encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership and to ensure that broadcast station licenses are used in the public interest.” In other words, Durbin wants to bring the wonders of government enforced affirmative action to our nation’s airwaves. Sen. James Inhofe warns: “The revocation of broadcaster licenses [under the Durbin Doctrine] is a real possibility, which at the very least will threaten the willingness of broadcasters to appeal to conservative listeners.”

So what this means is if Durbin and the rest of the socialists get their way, and they're listening and don't like what they hear, the broadcast license of the radio station airing said programming would have its license placed in jeopardy due to reasons of diversity. You know, it's similar to what Chavez in doing in Venezuela and Castro in Cuba. No big deal.

It's not the revocation of the Fairness Doctrine we need to worry about. That will never happen. It would be too obvious. It's the acceptance of the Durbin Doctrine that will throttle our right to free speech.
