I'll never forget watching this unfold while standing in a radio studio watching it on TV. It just makes me sick to watch and I think that's why many people are in denial about it. I'm sure the anniversary really hits home for those of you who fly for a living knowing that it very easily could have been a plane you were piloting. One of the first things I wanted to know was what airlines the planes were.
Fortunately, security has improved so as to make any attack like this highly unlikely today. I think we can all rest assured that John McCain would not have kept reading "My Pet Goat" for more than about 2 seconds after hearing about the first plane strike.
George W. Bush has taken this kind of crap from the left for 7 years and never ONCE lowered himself to comment or defend himself. He's the real hero from 9/11. He stated today," . . . when the buildings fell, the heroes rose." He was unknowingly describing himself. I have said this over and over, he's a man's man and rose to the occasion like few Presidents in this nation's history have. You state "security has improved so as to make any attack like this highly unlikely today." as if it happened on its own. George Bush is the reason that "security has improved . . ." I suppose what the left believes Bush should have done is to jump up, scream, and skip out of the class room with weak wrists flapping, panicking the kids in the process. I just thank God it wasn't Gore or even worse, BO, sitting in that chair reading "My Pet Goat".
I hardly think George Bush is the reason airline security has improved. He fought taking airport screening responsiblity out of the hands of the minimum wage Airport Temp subcontractors until the very end-and then denied TSA workers the right to a union(like all other Gov't employees) when he signed the bill. ALPA had to fight to get the armed pilot on the flight deck-Bush and the FAA fought that right up to the end also and then refused to even reimburse the pilots for the time they took off on their own for the training. He and the FAA/TSA have also yet to implement the secure "sterile area" concept -7 years after 911. This involves using about a $3000 secondary barrier to block off the flight deck whenever the door is opened. United has a test program in process on their 757s(public info)-this could have been in place years ago if Bush had said, "Make it happen."But he was good on the bullhorn at Ground zero. He is,and continues to be, a weak and ineffectual leader. History will judge him harshly. I hope a McCain presidency makes Bush look like the dufus he is.
I'm so confused. Who SIGNED the Patriot Act? Who SIGNED the legislation authorizing the TSA WITH unions? Who SIGNED the legislation authorizing armed pilots? Your comment on the "sterile area" concept is the FIRST time I've heard of United's program and I bet that's true of 90% of the line pilots. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a good idea. Just haven't been following that issue. I'm not saying everything has been perfect in the Bush Administration, but I am saying he has done the best he could under the circumstances dealing with one of the highest spending, uncooperative Congresses in history (except when it came to authorizing the use of force in Afghanistan and Iraq) Oh wait, they were tricked by the "dufus", weren't they? The fact is: seven years with no further attacks. That's quite an accomplishment no matter what happens from here on out.
You're right-he SIGNED them-after realizing even the Republicans were not with him on these issues. There is more to being a real President than bullying, posturing and saying, "Bring 'em on"! Bush did not INITIATE or take the LEAD on any of these security reforms(whoops, correction-Bush did initiate the Patriot Act)....he opposed them until it was clear he would not prevail. As to no attacks, I hate to say it, but most of the previous successes were in "gestation" for a period of 5-8 years..crossing my fingers that our gov't is now on top of it. So if somethng happens next year or 2010, will it be McCain's or Obama's fault? As to TSA and having a union(it did not happen under the original bill):
Effort to Give TSA Screeners Union Rights Advances

It was a good day for unions.
A Senate committee yesterday approved a measure that would give collective-bargaining rights to about 43,000 airport screeners at the Transportation Security Administration. The committee's action followed House approval of similar legislation last month. acebook
If the Senate goes along with the committee's decision, the issue of union rights for TSA screeners is likely to provoke a rare clash with the White House over federal workplace rules. After the House vote, the Bush administration vowed to oppose the legislation
Someday the public will know how many attacks were prevented during the Bush administration. I'll bet it was in the hundreds. Based on the gestation period you mentioned, then 9/11 was Clinton's fault. Now that I can believe. Here's the thing though. Do you REALLY believe Gore or Kerry would have done a better job? And if you do, I'd love to hear why. Oh by the way, looking forward to the first TSA strike. That'll do wonders for our industry and the economy in general.
Didn't the Republican dufus beat the Democratic doofi not once but twice? What would that make the Democratic doofi? They would have to be a step lower than the Republican dufus that beat them wouldn't they? C'mon Vance you can do it. Give the dufus just one little bitty bit of credit; just a little bit, at least for beating the Democratic doofi if nothing else. Plus he is a very accomplished reader gobbling up classics like "My Pet Goat." That supposed children's story is actually an allegory about Al Gore. Bet you didn't know that. :)
