The Original Conservative - William F. Buckley

William F. Buckley was the epitome of the academic elite. One problem though. He was a Conservative and drove the liberals nuts. He actually defended Senator McCarthy and his actions against the Communists. The entertainment industry never forgave him for it. He refused to endorse Eisenhower and Nixon because he believed they were not true Conservatives. He had no problem questioning George Bush's conservatism. But he didn't hesitate to support Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. It would have been interesting if he had entered the fray this election season as to who's more Conservative. He was Rush Limbaugh's idol. His legacy lives on in The National Review.

Did you ever see the movie, Good Night and Good Luck about the McCarthy era? They made him look really terrible. George Clooney was the leading role so it's not surprising.

I was familiar with Buckley but have never read his books but have read the National Review. I would like to go back and read more of his works.

A great thinker and understood how democracy works. He had the education and verbal agility to explain his concepts to the point they made sense and drove liberals nuts. He stood firm against the rise of socialism in his day and will be missed during this current swell
